Decaf coffee, short for decaffeinated coffee, is coffee that has had most of its caffeine removed. Typically, at least 97% of the caffeine is extracted from the coffee beans before they are roasted.
There are several methods to decaffeinate coffee, including:
Direct Contact Method: The beans are treated with a solvent like methylene chloride, which binds to the caffeine. When the beans are roasted, both the solvent and caffeine are removed.
Swiss Water Process: The beans are soaked in hot water to extract the caffeine. The water containing the caffeine is then drained away, and the beans are roasted.
Carbon Dioxide Method: This method uses carbon dioxide to remove caffeine from the beans.
Decaf coffee retains most of the flavor and aroma of regular coffee, but with significantly less caffeine. It is a great option for those who want to enjoy coffee without the stimulating effects of caffeine.
